Open Government
Transparency and accountability come first. Unless there is a good reason to protect information, like personal data, it should be accessible and browsable.
Open Data
We follow the Open Data Charter’s principles: open by default, timely, accessible, comparable, well-governed, and inclusive. Civic OS enforces structured data and creates APIs so information can be shared.
Open Source
When code is shared, everyone benefits: anyone can contribute, there are no licensing fees, and the community shares the investment. Civic OS is licensed under AGPL, so the work serves the public, not private shareholders.
